Nashik: Country-made liquor is being sold illegally on a large scale in the city limits — this disturbing trend came to light after the police found 21 such cases across the commissionerate on Sunday night.
Sixty-five criminals were also nabbed during the drive undertaken by the police.
Shrikant Dhivare, deputy commissioner of police (zone II), said the incident came into light after operation 'Target', aimed to curb illegal activities in the city, was undertaken on Sunday.
"Crackdown on the number of activities was done in both the zones. It was found that country-made liquor is being sold in slum and other deserted areas of the city," he said, adding that 21 such cases were exposed in a single night.
Dhivare said the figures were alarming. "The sale of illegal liquor is rampant in the city; more action would be taken in the future," he added.
Besides, the police also checked on 65 wanted criminals on record and took preventive action against them. the police, however, could not find any clues about the 25 other criminals they were on the lookout for.
Dhivare added that 49 hotels, 32 lodges and 11 dhabas were also checked in and around the city. "Many establishments allow consumption of alcohol without having necessary permits. Crackdown on such entities was also undertaken," he said. There were around 116 autorickshaws that were also checked for possibility of any criminal activity. "Auto drivers may be involved in criminal activity or may not have valid documents. Other than autos, 769 private vehicles were also checked by the police on Sunday night," Dhivare added.
